Team Decatur Wins “Most Fit City” Award at the KP Corporate Run/Walk

The City of Decatur, known for its great schools, shops and restaurants, has now claimed the title of “Most Fit City” according to the organizers of the annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk.

Decatur Active Living teamed up with the Decatur Business Association to sponsor Team Decatur and entered into the annual event. This is the first time that a city has entered as a team.

Team Decatur was 134 members strong by race day and was comprised of city employees as well as citizens and members of the business community. Ages of participants ranged from the teens to a gentleman in his 80s.

Active Living Board member Michael Harbin, co-captain of Team Decatur, summed it up well - “Running/walking is a main focus, but just being there is a major part of community-building which is just as much a focus for me. Meeting all of these Team Decatur people who, each for their own reasons, have chosen to join us is important….” Decatur City Commissioner Patti Garrett was presented with the “Most Fit City” trophy at the awards ceremony following the race.

AJC Decatur Book Festival This Weekend (Sept 3-5, 2010) In The City of Decatur

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival is an annual, free book festival that takes place over Labor Day weekend in Decatur, Georgia at several venues located in and around the downtown Decatur Square. The festival is known as the "largest independent book festival in the county."

The festival brings more than 300 authors to Decatur for the holiday weekend. The authors give readings, talks, and panel discussions. Authors include Pulitzer Prize winning and best-selling authors of fiction in many genres and nonfiction on diverse topics. The authors come to Decatur from across the country and international points as well.

The Dammages play on September 1, The Jim Pearce Band on September 8, Angela Easterling plays on September 15, Wendy Jans on September 22 and the series culminates with the all women’s African drumming group The Conundrums. Bring your lunch or pick up a sandwich from one of the many restaurants.

Enjoy Concerts on the Square in September in the City of Decatur

September in Decatur brings the return of the Decatur Business Association’s Concerts on the Square and Blue Sky Concerts. Concerts on the Square are presented every Saturday night in September beginning at 7 pm and feature an eclectic mix of music.

This year, the first Concert will be held on Sunday night, September 5 beginning at 6 pm, in conjunction with the Decatur Book Festival. Zydeco T will be playing zydeco music at the Book fEstival culminating BBQ activity. Gwen Hughes & The Retro Jazz Kats play on September 11, Stratogeezer on September 18, and the series ends with JazzChronic on September 25. Bring your picnic dinner or visit one of the many restaurants for either take out, or dining in before the concert.

July 4th Pied Piper Parade, Concert & Fireworks In The City Of Decatur

Celebrate the 4th of July in the City of Decatur. Decorate your bicycle, skateboard, or wagon and join the Pied Piper Parade as it winds through downtown Decatur. Parade line-up is at the First Baptist Church of Decatur at 5:30 p.m.

The parade begins at 6 p.m. It ends at the Community Bandstand on the square with a presentation of colors and the Star Spangled Banner. The concert, featuring the Callanwolde Concert Band, begins at 7 p.m. in the Community Bandstand. Fireworks begin at dark (approximately 9 p.m.) and are shot from the top of the DeKalb County parking deck.

Beach Party in Decatur on June 18, 2010

The City of Decatur is bringing in 60 tons of sand to turn its landlocked square into the Decatur Beach complete with a kid's boardwalk, live music, dancing, food court, and more.

This year the Beach Party celebrates its 25th year. Attendees can start with a visit to "Decatur Beach" set up on Ponce de Leon Avenue with 60 tons of sand and plenty of sand toys. On the Community Bandstand on the Square the Reputations will play beach music and more from 5 - 8 p.m. Then at 8 p.m. Terry Lee and the G.T.'s will play live from the mainstage on the MARTA Plaza. Beachgoers can enjoy "Dancing on the Plaza" until midnight.

The City of Decatur is presenting is 22nd Annual Decatur Arts Festival this Memorial Weekend (May 29 - 30) featuring works from artists across the Southeast.

The Artists Market features more than 140 artists selected through a competitive jury process. The market is known for its high quality of artwork and attracts artists from all over the southeast and beyond. Decatur Arts Festival - Memorial Day Weekend

The Decatur Arts Festival returns Memorial Weekend (May 29 -30) in the City of Decatur. This is one of the largest art festivals in Atlanta and attracts visitors and vendors from across the Southeast. This annual festival is a great way for families to spend the day outdoors.

Enjoy the day strolling along the streets lined with booths featuring some of the finest in local and regional art. Grab a bite to eat from one of the local food vendors, or visit one of the nearby restaurants on the Square. You'll find a variety of events planned throughout the day for everyone to enjoy.

Decatur's biggest arts event kicks off with the unveiling of the official arts festival poster and culminates with the main events on Memorial Day Weekend. Get started Friday evening, May 28, with the ArtWalk all around Decatur.

Then enjoy new dance, theater and literary arts performances, musicians all day long on Decatur's community bandstand, a juried artists market, the fine arts exhibition, a special Kids and Teens Arts Festival and more. Be a part of it!

Decatur Beach Party June 18th - Celebrating 25 Years of Fun in the Sun!

Celebrate the beginning of summer at the annual Decatur Beach Party Friday, June 18, 2010 from 5 p.m. until midnight. Decatur brings in 60 tons of sand and turns its landlocked square into the Decatur Beach complete with a kid’s boardwalk, live music, dancing, food court, and more. This year the Beach Party celebrates its 25th year!

Attendees can start with a visit to “Decatur Beach” set up on Ponce de Leon Avenue with 60 tons of sand and plenty of sand toys. The expanded Kid’s Boardwalk Area – “Ponce Fun Pier” – will be set up on Ponce de Leon Avenue next to the sand. Also available for the children are sand buckets filled with a box supper and toy for $5.

On the Community Bandstand on the Square The Reputations will play beach music and more from 5 – 8 p.m. Then at 8 p.m. Terry Lee and the G.T.’s will play live from the mainstage on the MARTA Plaza. Beachgoers can enjoy “Dancing on the Plaza” until midnight.

The Food Court will be set up on E. Court Square between the beach/boardwalk area and the main stage. Enjoy a variety of beach fare such as hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, beer, wine and soft drinks. No outside food or beverages are allowed into the festival area.

Bring your picnic dinner or visit one of the many restaurants for either take out, or dining in before the concert.

Blue Sky Concerts are held every Wednesday in May from noon until 1 pm at the Bandstand on the Square. The Jane & Scott Show starts off the Spring series, Decaturite John Zedd plays on May 12, Mike Killeen plays May 19 and the series culminates with children’s favorite Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band. 27th Annual Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour Of Homes
