Tradition Comes Alive with Emory’s "A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols”

An Atlanta tradition since 1935, “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” will be held December 3 (8 p.m.) and December 4 (4 p.m. & 8 p.m.) at Emory’s Glenn Auditorium. Based on the traditional Christmas service at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England, the program is performed by the Emory University Chorus and Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Eric Nelson.

The local tradition of “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” grew out of Christmas concerts performed at Atlanta’s First Presbyterian Church in 1925. The annual event moved to Glenn Memorial Church upon its completion in 1931, and the current format for the program was adopted in 1935, enduring in the hearts and voices of Atlantans ever since.

The Concert will be held at Emory University's Glenn Auditorium located at 1652 N. Decatur Rd., Atlanta, 30322. For more information, visit Emory University.

Capture The Holiday Season With A Photo In A Classic Coca-Cola Santa Setting

Capture the holiday season and get a photo of you with friends and family in a Coca-Cola Santa classic painting by artist Haddon Sundblom or choose from a variety of photo options to commemorate your visit to the World of Coca-Cola.  This is a limited time opportunity until Jan. 5, 2011.

These holiday photos make great holiday greeting cards and gifts too. Haddon Sundblom was a Michigan-born illustrator that was commissioned in 1931 by The Coca-Cola Company to develop advertising images using Santa Claus. For inspiration, Sundblom turned to Clement Clarke Moore's 1822 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas." Moore's description of the man as "chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf" led to an image of Santa that was warm and friendly. For the next 35 years, Sundblom painted portraits of Santa that helped to create the modern image of Santa – an interpretation that today lives on in the minds of children of all ages and all over the world.

Center Theatre at the MJCCA Presents the Smash Musical, “HAIRSPRAY” -- December 9 - 19, 2010

Center Theatre at the MJCCA presents the hit musical, HAIRSPRAY, directed by Dina Shadwell. Running from December 9 – 19, 2010, the production will take place in Center Theatre’s beautiful Morris & Rae Frank Theatre (located at the MJCCA, 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody.)

Winner of multiple awards, including the 2003 Tony for Best Musical and the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, HAIRSPRAY sweeps us away to 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out – and change is in the air. Loveable plus-sized heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?

Songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. You’ll do-wop your way out of the theater, because “You Can’t Stop the Beat!”

Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, with book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. Hairspray is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

For more information, visit the Center Theatre.

Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, Emory University

Pagan meets St. Patrick and the Celtic world meets Appalachia at the Atlanta Celtic Christmas Concert, produced by the W.B. Yeats Foundation at Emory University. Featured in this year’s performance, which will be filmed as a PBS Christmas special, is Moya Brennan, known as the “Queen of Celtic Song,” and a brilliant ensemble of traditional musicians from Ireland. Also joining the Celtic Christmas family are Grammy Award-winning banjo virtuoso Alison Brown, madcap string player and percussionist Joe Craven, and balladeer John Doyle in a program of non-stop delight.

In its eighteenth season, the Atlanta Celtic Christmas Concert is one of the most popular events of the Holiday Season in Atlanta. A family entertainment for audiences of all ages, there’s always something old and new in the Concert. Whether in the gentle lilt of a fiddle tune, the bird-like cry of a gorgeous tin whistle, the snapping rhythm of a Scottish strathspey, the buoyant energy of Irish step dancers, or the shimmering echo of a harp floating through the auditorium, people are inspired to seek their own spiritual renewal. Both a celebration and a reflection, the Concert has for many Atlantans become a fun-filled yet inspirational way of finding themselves once again at home with the true meaning of Christmas.
